As with people, the lifestyle and habits of a country dog will differ greatly than a dog that lives in an urban area. To the dog the most obvious difference with living in the country might simply be the lack of fire hydrants. People will say that the difference is the amount of space one has. The country dog has room to run and play, be free and works to defend his territory from predators or intruders. The city dog will live in a more confined area and trips outside will always be at the end of a leash. Do you think that the dog will stay ‘confined’ if they are determined enough? Think again my friend, as these four legged friends of ours can be master manipulators.

The city dog may have a smaller dwelling, but the reality is any place in the house is a good place for them. When you leave a warm spot on the bed or the couch, they will hop up and take full advantage of this comfortable place. Going for a walk will become a game to them. They have a million places they will come across to claim as their territory, from parking meters, sign posts, hydrants, the tires on cars or just about anything on the street. After pulling you at a gallop down the street then will also decide to stop on a dime when they catch wind of something they like. This could be the aroma from the hot dog vendor on the street. Your dog will become fixed on it and moving them will be about as easy as dragging a cinder block down the road.

Conversely with the country dog, they likely sleep outside in their dog house, get up when they want and go wherever they want to do their business. No walks are necessary at all as they are self sufficient in this respect. As long as you put some food out for them and fresh water they will stay around defending their turf.
It’s always nice to have a pair of dogs so they have some company out there. The owners will also spend a great deal of time engaging in the dog’s version of hide and seek. Owners will be out in the fields or woods calling, walking, calling again hoping for the sound of their dog tags chiming. This is when they talk to their neighbors the most as well. Phone calls to either ask if they’ve seen the dog(s) or receiving calls saying you’re dogs are here if you want to bring the truck and come get them.

City dogs will dress in designer duds to impress the others when they meet and greet and socialize at the park. They will have play dates, and spend time interacting with other dogs here. The country dog has no time or need for clothing, their fur will fill out to meet the needs of their environment and other dogs will be seen as violating their turf and there will be angry barking not ‘socializing’ that follows this encounter.

The homes in the country are more open to someone sneaking up in the dark shadows so the dog is on guard ready to give a warning at any time. They will actually warn the owners of almost anything and everything in the area that moves with a loud aggressive bark and growl. Once one dog gets going with the alert others will chime in. In the city owners will have alarm systems triggered as their spoiled pooch sleeps comfortably waiting for their next walk.

Certainly dodging the crowds and being dragged everywhere the owner goes is a challenge for the city dog. They too will have their enemies like the delivery man, dog trainer or the young child that tries to catch their tail. The dogs are sneaky though and not matter what situation you put them in, city or country they will find ways to make you work for them in the long run. After all, it is all about ‘them’ isn’t it? What we don’t do for the love of our pets!
